Greek and Roman temples are the model for many villas and government buildings built from 1750 onwards. 
Classical architecture
By the British Museum in London you recognize the classical style at once. The front facade always has: 
- a colunnade
- a tympanum and
- an architrave.

Colunnade
The colonnade is made up of columns (vertical uprights) that sup­port the roof. They are long and round, and consist of a base (ped­estal), shaft (column) and capita/ (crown). The ancient Greeks and Romans had different types of columns, each to fit a particular ar­chitectural style.

Tympanum
The tympanum is the triangular gable that finishes off the roof on the front of the building. The tympanum rests on the capitals, the crowns carved out of stone that mark the top of columns. The tym­panum is decorated with (bas-relief) sculptures that tel1 you about the function of the building and what you can expect inside.

Architrave 
The architrave is the horizontal beam that rests on the top of the pillars. In the classica! temple the architrave carries the roof.

Arcade 
The word arcade comes from the Latin for bow, 'arcus'.
 
An arcade is a passage under an arch or row of arches. lt is also known as a gallery. Arcades were and are used in churches and roofed cloisters and shopping corridors. They protect you against the burning sun or the rain.

Pillars
Pillars are similar to columns, but are not always round. Sometimes they seem to be bundled together or they are square. You see them in churches, modern construttions and bridges and viaducts.
