have / has + past participle

I have walked all the way.
She has eaten my food!
Present perfect continuous

have / has + been + -ing

I have been walking to school every day.
She has been eating my food.

Present perfect

  • something happened in the past but influences the present.
  • emphasis on the result of something that happened in the past.
  • something that happened in the past - no specific time/date/duration.

  1. I've lived in Manchester for a year now.
  2. They have just released a new EP.
Present perfect continuous

  • something that lasted a while, happened more than once or is a habit.
  • emphasis on the duration (for days, for hours,  for ages, etc.)



  1.  Our cat has been getting in all kinds of trouble.
  2. We have been working on this song for hours.
