Je gebruikt must als je zelf vindt dat iets wel of niet zou moeten.
Je gebruikt have to als iets verplicht is of iemand anders vindt dat het moet.

  • I must visit grandma, I haven't seen her in ages!
  • Children under sixteen have to go to school.

Als je to have to in ontkennende zinnen gebruikt, dan verandert de betekenis van moeten in niet hoeven.

  • I don't have to go to that stupid party
  • She doesn't have to come if she doesn't want to..

Must in een ontkennende zin betekent moet niet (must not / mustn't)
