Indications for red blood cells 
('packed cells')
  • Blood loss
    bleeding (gastrointestinal, trauma, ruptured aorta, child-birth)
    - surgery

  • Not enough production
    hematological disease (thalassemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, leukemia, myelofibrosis) 
    - chemo therapy (and stem cell transplantation)
    - severe inflammation/infections
    - renal failure
