Simple Present
We use the Simple Present to talk about:
  • Facts
  • Habits
  • Routines
  • Things that happen always/ never

Also: to talk about 'timetabled' future events  & a series (completed) of events*.
* (ex: instructions & demonstrations)

Some rules to remember...
Most verbs in the Simple Present have two forms:
1. The base (stem) for all persons except 3rd person singular: 

  • I work at Mc Donald's.
  • You work at ZARA.
  • They work for Mr. Jones.

2. The base +s for the third person singular:

  1. She/ He works at Starbucks in the Renaissance mall.
  2. Leon works for Bohama N.V.
  3. The machine works on solar power.

Spelling
The base of verbs ending in a hissing sound (sisklank) is followed by -es; if the base ends in -e, only -s is added.
  • kiss    --> kisses
  • mix     --> mixes
  • catch --> catches
  • fish     --> fishes

The verbs do and go get -es:
  • She goes to international conferences every year.
  • Tara does her homework late at night.

When a verb ends in a consonant +y, the y changes into -ie
 !!!!BUT: Vowel + Y --> No spelling change!!!!!
  • Mary flies to NY every year.
  • John tries to sell cars every day.
