London
London is the capital city of England (and the UK). With a popuation of just under 10 million, it is the third largest city in Europe and the 27th biggest city in the world, in terms of number of people.
Ireland
The Republic of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom from 1801 until 1921 and then became independent, so it is no longer part of the U.K. The capital city is Dublin
Scotland
In 1707, Scotland and England combined to create the new Kingdom of Great Britain. In 2014, they voted on whether to leave the United Kingdom and become independent, but 55% of people voted "no" - so they stayed in the U.K. The capital city is Edinburgh
Wales
After over 200 years of war, the King of England defeated Wales in 1283. In 1535, Wales joined in English legal system (so they have the same laws). The capital city is Cardiff
Northern Ireland
The north-east part of the island of Ireland chose to stay in the United Kingdom when the rest of Ireland voted for independence in 1921. There has been a lot of violence on the island since then, as some people want the whole island to be united. The capital of Northern Island is Belfast.
