Relative pronouns
(Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden)

  • verwijzen terug naar een persoon, dier, ding.
  • persoon = who, whose, whom, that
  • dier/ding = (of) which, that

Voorbeelden:
The teacher whose calculator I stole is my maths teacher.

The food which/that was left on the counter was eaten by the cat.

verschil van who&whom
-Who: Gebruik "who" wanneer je verwijst naar het onderwerp van de zin. Het onderwerp is de persoon die de actie uitvoert. Denk aan "who" als het equivalent van "hij", "zij", of "zij" (in meervoud) in de antwoordzin.

Voorbeeld: "Who is calling?" (Wie belt er?)
Antwoordzin: "He is calling." (Hij belt.)
In dit geval is "who" het onderwerp van de zin.


-Whom: Gebruik "whom" wanneer je verwijst naar het object van een werkwoord of voorzetsel. Het object is de persoon die de actie ontvangt. Denk aan "whom" als het equivalent van "hem", "haar", of "hen" in de antwoordzin.
Voorbeeld: "To whom did you give the book?" (Aan wie heb je het boek gegeven?)
Antwoordzin: "I gave the book to him." (Ik gaf het boek aan hem.)
Hier is "whom" het object van het voorzetsel "to".
