In the FCE exam writing an essay is compulsory. You are asked to write an essay outlining and discussing issues on a particular topic.

  • Remember to cover the two points given and add one of your own.
  • Make sure you only include relevant information

  • Include an essay title that reflects the question.
  • Communicate your ideas clearly
  • do not include any informal language
  • make your writing impersonal
  • write in a fairly formal style

before finishing it.

  • Make sure your ideas are well linked using a variety of linking phrases.
  • organise your ideas in paragraphs.
  • include an introduction and a conclusion
  • outline your main ideas in the introduction
  • summarise your main argument in the conclusion

  • Rephrase key language in your own words where possible.
  • Use modal verbs and passive forms
  • Try to use a wide range of vocabulary within the topic.
  • introduce complex clauses with who, which etc.
  • avoid using the same word (especially nouns) very often. Use synonyms.

body: topic sentence - supporting evidence ( examples, facts, opinion of experts)
conclusion: repeat thesis sentence and main ideas in the body in different words
