De -ing vorm wordt na de volgende werkwoorden gebruikt:

• to mind
  
• to keep
  
• to stop

Na de volgende werkwoorden kan je zowal de -ing vorm als to + werkwoord gebruiken:

• to like
• to start
• to begin

She likes dancing.

She likes to dance.

Uitzondering op to like is dat je bij would like geen -ing vorm maar to + werkwoord gebruikt.

• I like helping people.
• I would like to help you.

Wanneer een zin begint met een werkwoord, dan gebruik je altijd de -ing vorm.

• Advertising is expensive.

Na een voorzetsel gebruik je altijd de -ing vorm.

• He left without saying a word.
• Thank you for calling.

Voorzetzels zijn bijv.: 

before/after/for/in/of/to

Na worth en it is no use  gebruik je ook altijd de -ing vorm.
