  • After the middle ages people loved to tell stories about how stupid people were in the middle ages.

Spices
  • Medieval food did not taste great.
  • Most of the time meals were made with preserved food. Like salted fish, or dried meat.
  • To make it somewhat edible, people added spices.

  • Throughout the medieval times, spices got in Europe using the silk road.
  • The road was long and unsafe, and that made spices expensive.
  • In 1453 the prices got even higher, when the Ottomans gained a monopoly on spices.
  • A monopoly means that they were the only ones trading in spices and they raised the prices.

  • The maps were not reliable.
  • People were scared of what might live in the oceans.
