Items in this lesson

You can:
- Remove single and double brackets
- Write formulas without brackets
- Plot a parabola, identify upward/downward opening, axis of symmetry, vertex
- Solve quadratic equations
- Use all of the above in story questions

Slide 1 - Slide

Remove single/double brackets
- You may use a multiplication table.
- In case of double brackets: combine like terms.

Slide 2 - Slide

Write formulas without brackets
- Write the part(s) with brackets without brackets.
- Combine like terms.

Slide 3 - Slide

Plot a parabola, etc.
- Before you plot a graph, make a table
- Remember to use brackets when squaring a negative variable!

Slide 4 - Slide

Plot a parabola, etc.

Plot all points from the table
                                                                         Connect with a smooth curve

Slide 5 - Slide

Plot a parabola, etc
This parabola is upward opening
(other option is downward opening)

The pink line is the axis of symmetry, formula: x = 2
(Formula axis of symmetry is always x = ...)

The lowest points is called the vertex, coordinates: (2, -8)
(if the parabola is downward opening,
the vertex is the highest point)

Slide 6 - Slide

Solve quadratic equations
All quadratic equations have 2, 1 or 0 solutions.
Use cards to solve quadratic equations. Give exact answers.

Slide 7 - Slide

Solve quadratic equations
All quadratic equations have 2, 1 or 0 solutions.
Use cards to solve quadratic equations. Give exact answers.

Slide 8 - Slide

Solve quadratic equations

Stories
In the picture frame on the right
all 3 photo's are 10 by 15 cm.
The edges and spaces between
each photo are all the same width.

Make a formula with brackets for the total area A of the picture frame.
