8.6 Around your cells
Learning objectives
  • You will learn how substances flow in and out your cells and how tissue fluid ends up in your blood.
  • You will learn what the function is of your lymphatic system.

Slide 9 - Slide

Where does the liquid in blisters come from?

Slide 10 - Slide

Blood pressure
= force with which blood pushes against the walls of blood vessels

Healthy blood pressure for young people = around 110/70 millimetre of mercury

Systolic pressure = arises when the ventricles contract

Diastolic pressure = during heartbeat pause

Slide 11 - Slide

How do substances enter and leave your cells?
Tissue fluid = fluid that flows around your cells; intermediate station between blood and cells

Slide 12 - Slide

How does tissue fluid re-enter your blood?
1. Lymphatic vessels = small canals that remove the excess tissue fluid from tissues
  • Lymph = tissue fluid inside a lymphatic vessel

2. Capillaries

Slide 13 - Slide

Lymphatic system
Lymphatic vessels:
Valves
Flabby walls
Low pressure

Does this remind you of something?

Slide 14 - Slide

Slide 15 - Slide

Lymphatic system = ensures that tissue fluid flows back into the bloodstream and that pathogens are fought

Lymph glands or lymph nodes

Slide 16 - Slide

Lymph glands/ lymph nodes
in here, a few lymphatic vessels join; they contain a lot of white blood cells
