1794-95 French invasion

Batavian Revolution = Patriots return with the French army and are able to take over power.

Stadthouder Willem V flees to England and the regenten loose their power.

1795-1806 Batavian Republic

Important changes:
  • New administration elected by citizens (National Assembly).
  • The Batavian Republic became a unitary state (= eenheidsstaat). The new laws applied everywhere throughout the country.
  • All citizens were given the same fundamental rights (for example freedom of religion and freedom of expression).
  • Constitution (rules for administration and fundamental rights)

After Napoleon came to power in France in 1799, he  became more and more involved in the Netherlands.

1806-1810 Kingdom of Holland
Napoleon makes his brother Louis Napoleon king of the Netherlands. When Napoleon is displeased with the rule of Louis Napoleon, he dismisses him.

1810-1813 Part of France
Napoleon turned the Netherlands into a French province.

Changes:
  • High taxes to pay for wars
  • Trade declined
  • Conscription introduced
  • Lawbook introduced
  • Register Office introduced 
  • New measures and weights.

United Kingdom of the Netherlands

  • 1812 Napoleon's unsuccessful campaign to Russia.
  • 1814-15 Congress of Vienna
  • 1815 Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon definitively defeated.
  • 1815 United Kingdom of the Netherlands. In France and other countries, kings are reinstalled. New administration in the Netherlands. The last stadholder's son becomes King William I.
