There are a few factors that determine the location or site of a settlement:

  1.  Acces to water
  2. Land quality 
  3. Defence
  4. Aspect/Shelter
  5. Natural resources 
  6. Attractiveness of the area 
  7. Function

There is a difference between the site and the situation of a settlement: 

  • Site = the specific location of the settlement

  • Situation = the position of the settlemen relative to nearby physical and human features.
