• Explain how to deal with accidents and emergencies in a salon environment
• List the different types of fire extinguishers used in hair and beauty salons.

Employer responsibilities 

Last week we looked at the different H&S legislations linked to hairdressing.

Employers have responsibilities under these legislations.

In your group, research this and make a list of the employers responsibilities

Below is a list of 4 accidents and emergency situations. In your groups, discuss how you think each one would be dealt with.

• Slips, trips and falls
• Client or colleague being taken ill
• A fire in the salon
• A flood caused by a leaking basin

Someone falls in the salon

Check they are ok

Move them if you are able to

Check what has caused them to fall (have they tripped over something causing a hazard!!)

Record in accident book

Call for a first aider, if needed

Call emergency services (999) if required

Level of responsibility

During an emergency, a salon may allocate specific job roles to members of staff. 

These people will be competent in carrying out these tasks. They will usually be more senior members of staff.
