What are STD's?
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections spread from person to person during sex (vaginal, oral, or anal) or close intimate contact. 

  • STDs are also called sexually transmitted infections, or STIs.

  • Main age group infected by std's are 15-24

  • Most of the time you can't see if somebody has a STD

  • Only STD's caused by a bacteria can be treated with medicine. Viral STD's can not.

Chlamydia
* common, curable STD

*Symptoms:
-discharge from the vagina, penis, or anus
-pain in the lower belly
-fever
-pain when peeing
(often no symptoms)

* What to do about it?
Take the antibiotics exactly as prescribed



*Can cause infertility if not treated!

Genital herpes
*Most people have no symptoms, some get outbreaks (see picture)

* Caused by 2 viruses 

* Caused by vaginal, anal or oral sex

*Will never fully go away, medicine can control the outbreaks.

Genital warts
*Even if there are no warts, HPV might still be active in the genital area and can spread to others

* Caused by vaginal, anal or oral sex

surgery

Gonorrhea
*Even if there are no warts, HPV might still be active in the genital area and can spread to others

rectal pain, especially when having a bowel movement (pooping)

HIV and AIDS
*HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system.

*Most people who are diagnosed early and take medicines for HIV can live long.

*In AIDS, the immune system is severely weakened. 

HIV also can pass from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

Hepatitis B
* Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV)

* sex, sharing needles for drugs, mother to baby

*No treatment, mostly away within six months. if not, chronic hepatitis

What to do when you think you have a std?
  •  Get tested! Go to the GP or a STD clinic

  • Contact your sexual partners of the last 2 months

  • Have safe sex (condom) till you have the results!

  • If you have a bacterial std, finish the whole treatment!
