Slide 1 - Slide
What do you remember about mitosis?
Slide 2 - Open question
Slide 3 - Video
Please order the
four
stages of Mitosis!
Prophase!
Metaphase!
Anaphase!
Telophase!
InterPhase!
Slide 4 - Drag question
What happens during prophase?
Slide 5 - Slide
Chromatin is condensed into chromosomes
The nuclear envelope breaks down and disappears
Spindle fibers form from centrioles in animal cells
What happens during prophase?
Slide 6 - Slide
What about during metaphase?
Slide 7 - Slide
Spindle fibers attach to chromosomes
Sister chromatids line up at the midline of the cell
What about during metaphase?
Slide 8 - Slide
So now whats going on in anaphase?
Slide 9 - Slide
Sister chromatids at the midline are pulled apart and move to each end of the cell
Each half of the cell now has a complete, identical set of chromosomes
So now whats going on in anaphase?
Slide 10 - Slide
Last but not least, how about telophase?
Slide 11 - Slide
Spindle fibers break down
A new nuclear envelope begins to form around each half of the cell
Chromosomes begin to "de-condense" back into chromatin
Last but not least, how about telophase?
Slide 12 - Slide
What happens next?
Slide 13 - Slide
Though not technically part of mitosis, it's still important.
This is the final stage of cell division, where the parent cell fully splits into two different cells
In plants a hard plate forms between the two cells called the "cell plate" which then gets replaced by a plasma membrane and cellulose cell wall.
In animals the cell pinches in and splits along the "cleavage furrow" formed in the middle of the cell.
What about cytokinesis!
Slide 14 - Slide
"cyto" - "kinesis"
Cyto means cell
Kinesis means movement
Cytokinesis is the
movement
of the new
cells
apart from each other
Remembering Cytokinesis...
Slide 15 - Slide
Slide 16 - Slide
What phase of mitosis do these images show?
Prophase!
Metaphase!
Anaphase!
Telophase!

Slide 18 - Video
00:22
Look at how the chromosomes are arranged at this point. What stage of mitosis is this?
A
Metaphase
B
Prophase
C
Anaphase
D
Telophase
Slide 19 - Quiz
00:35
A hard cell plate formed in the middle of this cell after mitosis. What type of cell did we just watch divide?
A
Plant cell!
B
Animal Cell!
Slide 20 - Quiz
00:45
The cell in the video just underwent anaphase, how do you know this?
A
The cell split into two, distinct cells
B
The chromosomes pulled "away" from each other
C
The chromosomes arranged themselves on the equator of the cell
D
The cell's DNA was just replicated
