Mutual distrust
USA afraid that communism will spread to other countries.
Communism is a threat to democracy.

In their place the Soviet Union has the same fears. 
Capitalism causes inequality.

There they did not agree with eachother.

Truman & Marshall against Stalin
Truman Doctrine ; The USA actively engage to stop the spread of communism

Marshallplan ; economical support for European countries to prevent communism from spreading.

The Netherlands also had marshallhelp to pay for the reconstruction after the war.

The blockade of Berlin (1948-49)
Stalin blocked all accesspoints to Berlin to try and take over the entire city. 

The Americans supported the citizens from Berlin with an  Airlift. 
For a year American airplanes provided the German people with food and other supplies.
