Spreekwoorden (Proverbs)
Definition:   A spreekwoord is a complete sentence that expresses a general                           truth, life lesson, or piece of wisdom.
Fixed form: Cannot be changed grammatically.

Usage:           Stands alone as a full sentence.

Example:  “De appel valt niet ver van de boom.”  (Children resemble their                                    parents.)

Gezegdes (Sayings)
Definition: A gezegde is a fixed group of words without a verb, often                                            figurative, used as part of a sentence.

Usage: It's not a full sentence and must be used within a sentence to make                    sense.

Example:“Hij is iemand met het hart op de tong.” (He speaks his mind freely.)

Uitdrukkingen (Idioms/Expressions)
Definition: An uitdrukking is a fixed phrase with a verb that is also used as                                part of a sentence.

Usage: Often metaphorical, these can sometimes be conjugated or slightly                     adjusted grammatically.

Example:“De koe bij de horens vatten.”    (To tackle the problem directly.)
