Met used to + infinitief beschrijft men een gewoonte in het verleden, of een situatie die enige tijd bestond en nu niet meer.

He used to smoke, but he stopped two years ago.
Vroeger rookte hij altijd, maar hij is twee jaar geleden gestopt.
