5. How is “Neighborhood Watch #2” structured and what is revealed in this chapter?
Like the previous chapter titled "Neighborhood Watch #1," this chapter is set up like a schedule. It relates both Olly's daily schedule and Madeline's daily schedule as she watches for him through the window.
6. Why does Madeline come to envy Olly's life in “Higher Education"?
Olly sends Madeline pictures from his school of his classrooms, locker, etc. in order to make her feel she is a part of his life. However, Madeline sees these things and envies his world outside of a bubble.
7. What is the significance of the family portrait that Madeline's mother gives her?
The portrait is of Madeline's mother, father, brother, and herself on a beach in Hawaii when Madeline was four months old. It signifies the time when Madeline was still free in the world and part of a happy family.
8. What does Madeline write to her mother in “Good-bye”?
This is Madeline's farewell letter to her mother as she plans to run away to Hawaii, knowing that she may die from the experience. Madeline tells her mother that she loves her but she must also live her own life.
9. Why has Madeline chosen Hawaii as the destination she wants to escape to with Olly?
Madeline is inspired to go to Hawaii because she would like to snorkel and see its state fish. Her bigger inspiration, however, is the photograph of Madeline with her family on the beach as a baby.
