Tasks

Using the grid above to help you come up with three questions about the image

Give two examples of gender discrimination in society today. E.G. Many women are still paid less than men for the same job.

Why do men and women often compete in separate sports?

On average in the UK why do you think men earn more than women?

Who do you think is more likely to get promoted?

With a partner discuss a possible definition for each of the following key terms:

a) Gender Equality b) Gender Prejudice

c) Sexual Stereotyping d) Gender Discrimination

People of all genders should have the same rights.

Key Term Definitions

Why do we celebrate this day?

What is the significance of this day?

Is this day fair on men?

What events could your school organise to celebrate this day?

Who are your positive female role models?

In an ideal world if everyone had strong role models and leaders to look up to in their communities then young people could grow up feeling as if they can achieve anything and be inspired to see what is possible for their futures.

Making a Difference

It is easy to assume that this is already happening in many parts of the world such as the UK, but is it really?

Positive Discrimination Argument | Loose Women

6 Minutes

Imagine a world where the glass ceiling does not exist.

What would be different? What would be the same? Do you prefer this world?

Imagine you woke up tomorrow and the glass ceiling did not exist.

How would you feel?

Are there differences between how men and women feel in this new world?

Make notes on these questions and the questions in the thought bubble above.

In the English language, the word "he" is used to refer to males and "she" to refer to females. But some people identify as neither gender, or both.

  • As someone’s gender identity might not be immediately obvious, you might use the wrong pronouns when addressing them. If you are unsure you can ask politely, what pronouns they prefer. Always respect their answer.

  • They, Ze and Hir are some examples of gender neutral pronouns. These pronouns can be used for any gender and are gender neutral.

WHY DOES A PRONOUN MEAN EVERYTHING?

If you are unsure of someone’s gender identity you can ask politely, what pronouns they prefer.

As a class think of arguments to support why women should be treated equally in all aspects of society and have the right to vote (same rights as men) in every country around the world.
