introduction: the ESW
Last year, you have learned that the English-speaking world is composed of many countries.
English is not only an official language in the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia, but also in Malta, Jamaica, India, Malaysia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and many more countries!

Do you remember why that's the case?

Slide 2 - Slide

Why is English an official language in 67 different countries?

Slide 3 - Open question

The ESW
As of 2024, there are 57 sovereign states and 28 non-sovereign entities where English is an official language.

A sovereign state is a state that has the supreme sovereignty or ultimate authority over a territory. In other words, a sovereign state is viewed as independent.

Slide 4 - Slide

The ESW
Most states where English is an official language are former territories of the British Empire. But there are exceptions, such as Rwanda and Burundi, which were former Belgian colonies.

Most states and territories within the United States have English as an official language, and only Puerto Rico uses a language other than English as a primary working language.
