The sea route
Portugal was the first state that tried to find a way to Asia.
Henry (the Navigator) wanted to find a sea route, and not use the Silk Road.
He needed a new, strong ship. The carvel was designed.

In 1498 a sailer from Portugal found a route to Asia.
After a few struggles, the Portugese started trading spices.

Columbus
The Portugese earned a lot of money.
Christopher Columbus was an Italian merchant. He had a plan to go to India, but not through the east but through the west.
No one wanted to give him money except the Spaninsh King Ferdinand II of Aragon.
He "discovered" America, but he first thought he was in India.
