Definitions
  • reproduction- the production of offspring by a sexual or asexual process.
  • sexual reproduction-the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different types (sexes).
  • asexual reproduction- reproduction in the absence of a mate.
  • mitosis-a process where cell divides, resulting in two identical cells
  • meiosis-a specialized form of cell division that ultimately gives rise to non-identical sex cells
  • gametes-a reproductive cell
  • zygote-A fertilized eukaryotic cell; a cell after the union of male and female gametes
  • syngamy=fertilization- The fusion of gametes resulting in the formation of a zygote, which develops into a new organism
