Types of adverbs (ex. 8)
  • Adverbs of frequency (hoe vaak)
  • Adverbs of degree (in welke mate)
  • Adverbs of manner (hoe)
  • Adverbs of place (waar of waarheen)
  • Adverbs of time (wanneer)

Why should I care?
  • Each type of adverb has a set place in the sentence in English
  • In other words: this is important for word order when writing or speaking

Adverbs of frequency
Examples: always, never, often, usually en sometimes.
1. vóór het hoofdwerkwoord:
We always eat sandwiches for lunch.
My sister often loses her keys..
- na een vorm van to be:
The teacher is sometimes late.
Before, he was usually on time.

Adverbs of degree
Examples: very, almost, just, incredibly en terribly
1. vóór het woord waarover ze iets zeggen:
That is really kind of you!
You are driving terribly fast

Examples: slowly, loudly en carefully
1. meestal na het hoofdwerkwoord of na het voorwerp (object) 
2. In eenvoudige zinnen is dit meestal aan het einde van de zin (maar vóór het bijwoord van tijd):
John walks quickly.
Open the door carefully.
He played the flute beautifully yesterday

Adverbs of place
Deze bijwoorden staan meestal aan het eind van een zin:
My bike is in the shed.
They have already left for France.

Adverbs of time
1. Bijwoorden die aangeven wanneer iets gebeurt, staan meestal aan het eind van een zin na de plaats!. 
2. Als je de tijd extra wilt benadrukken kun je ze ook vooraan in een zin zetten.
They left two days ago.
Yesterday I fixed my bike.
Place before time: They left for France two days ago.
