Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to understand and use plural nouns.

Explain to the students that by the end of the lesson, they should be able to identify and use plural nouns correctly.

What are Plural Nouns?

Plural nouns refer to more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

Introduce the concept of plural nouns and provide examples of nouns that can be made plural.

Adding 'S' to Form Plurals

Most nouns can be made plural by simply adding 's' at the end.

• dog - dogs 
• book - books 
• house - houses

Explain the rule of adding 's' to form plurals and provide examples.

Adding 'ES' to Form Plurals

Nouns ending in 's', 'x', 'z', 'ch', or 'sh' require 'es' to form plurals.

• bus - buses
• box - boxes
• buzz - buzzes

Explain the rule of adding 'es' to nouns that end in specific letters and provide examples.

Adding 'IES' to Form Plurals

Nouns ending in 'y' with a consonant before it, change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es' to form plurals.

• baby - babies 
• berry - berries 
• fly - flies

Explain the rule of changing 'y' to 'i' and adding 'es' to nouns with specific endings and provide examples.

Adding 'VES' to Form Plurals

Nouns ending in '-f or -fe' require -ves to make the pural form

• knife - knives
• wolf - wolves

Exceptions

There are some nouns which have their own plural form that do not follow any specific rules

ask the student to think of examples of singular nouns with odd plural forms.
