What do you already know about adding fractions?
What Are Fractions?
Fractions represent parts of a whole. The top number is the numerator (the number of parts we have) and the bottom number is the denominator (the number of parts the whole is divided into).
Adding Like Fractions
When adding fractions with the same denominators, simply add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
Adding Unlike Fractions
To add fractions with different denominators, find a common denominator, then add the numerators and keep the common denominator.
Simplifying Fractions
After adding fractions, simplify the result by finding the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator and dividing both by it.
