Now onto modal verbs - hulpwerkwoorden!

Modal verbs (hulpwerkwoorden)
Veranderen niet van vorm. Hele werkwoord komt er achter.

  • Can: vragen of je/iemand iets kan doen
  • Could: beleefd willen vragen ook verleden tijd
  • Should: advies, geen verplichting
  • Must: spreker verplicht zichzelf, advies: geen verplichting
  • Have to: verplichting/overheid of van een ander.

Modal verbs uitzondering!
 Enige uitzondering is de modal verb have to. Bij he/she/it verandert dit werkwoord in has to.

Modal verbs = 
 een catgorie van hulpwerkwoorden
Must & have to:
  • zijn allebei hulpwerkwoorden
  • betekenen ongeveer "moeten"
  • Na deze hulpwerkwoorden volgt het hele werkwoord, bijvoorbeeld: 
  • 'I must go to the gym today.'    OR    'You have to go to work tomorrow.'

Must/have.
- Must drukt uit wat de spreker vindt dat moet gebeuren (internal obligation).
- Bijv. I must go home now. You must go home now.
-  Has to/ have to drukt uit dat er een regel is waaraan je je moet houden of dat je iets van een ander moet doen (external obligation).merk je het?

Must, should, have to
1.  You  should to speak to your brother and try to solve the problem. ( advies)
2. I  must  finish this assignment (opdracht) today. ( vind je zelf)
3. In international flights you have to check in one hour before departure. ( regels / verplichting)
4. You should visit Paris. What a beautiful city. ( advies)
5. In the petrol station we have to switch off the engine before filling the tank. ( regels)
6. I  have to wear my suit. It's a formal party. ( regels, advies)
8. I must earn a lot of money. I want to buy a house.( vind jij zelf)
9. I have to  speak English well.  I need it in my job. ( verplichting/ noodzaak)
