  1. If you could decide who gets their own statue (standbeeld),
    who would it be?

Today's goal & planning
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion as part of an argumentative essay on why you think somebody deserves a statue. You will use parts of Trevor Noah's stand-up as inspiration, and follow the structure: ''I think – because – for example''.

Planning:
- Watch stand-up (10 minutes - start at 5:40)
- Work on Essay (30 minutes)
- Reflection (5 minutes)

Introduction (recap)
Many people use social media every day. They use it to talk to friends, share photos, and read news. But social media also has bad effects. In this text, I will explain why social media is not always good for us.

In blue = something the reader probably agrees with, and recognises
In green = something to trigger their curiosity (nieuwsgierigheid creëren)
In pink = tell the reader what to expect

What part should be blue, what part should be green and what part should be pink?

Writing a conclusion/summary
  • Summarise your arguments
  • Do not add new arguments or examples
  • Restate your opinion by the end of this paragraph

In conclusion, TV series and movies affect our lives in many ways. They help us learn, feel emotions, find new ideas, connect with others, and relax. This is why they are not just fun — they are also an important part of our daily life.

Now you do the analysis

Trevor Noah
We're going to watch a part of Trevor Noah's show. Trevor Noah: who is he?

Before this part he discussed how he traveled through Germany and appreciated how they treat their history

He mentions Columbus Day (North America: celebrates the arrival of Christopher Columbus) and Indigenous Peoples' Day (a day to celebrate the history of the people who lived in America before the Europeans showed up)
