20 markers
Marking for twenty-mark essays is split into two categories: AO1 (Knowledge & Understanding) and AO2 (Evaluation & Analysis)
• AO1: Knowledge and Understanding relies on your knowledge of the text.
• AO2: Evaluation and Analysis relies on how well you can use this knowledge to actually answer the question.

1. An introduction
Two or three sentences outlining what you will cover – signposting your themes, make your main argument clear
2. 3 points answering the question
The number may change depending on the question and your knowledge – it is better to make 2 well-thought-out, well-supported comments than 4 weak ones!
3. For each point:
Which sources support or contradict it?
4. Look at your points - have you addressed both sides of the argument?
Again, this depends on the question but you will find most 20 markers are chosen because you can argue more than one side.
5. A conclusion
Two or three sentences summing up your answer (it will mirror the introduction)
Again, make your answer explicit – what side of the fence are you on?
