Liberals and conservatives

In 1815, there are two opinions regarding who should have the power in a country

1. Conservatives want to keep everything like it always was: power to the king and the nobles!
2. Liberals want power to the (rich) people and a constitution with freedom of speech and religion

Constitution of 1848

In 1840, Willem II becomes king. He is pressured by the liberals, who want more political power.  

In 1848, a revolution is about to happen. To prevent that, Willem II signs a constitution.

• Every 4 year elections (however, there is census suffrage: only when you earn enough, you can vote) 
• The Netherlands is a now a parlementary democracy

Het parlement is de volksvertegenwoordiging: hierin zitten mensen die door het volk gekozen 

- de taak van het parlement is om de regering te controleren

- het parlement bestaat uit de Eerste Kamer en de Tweede Kamer

- de Tweede Kamer wordt rechtstreeks gekozen door burgers

- de Eerste Kamer wordt indirect gekozen door burgers
