Constitution of 1848
In 1840, Willem II becomes king. He is pressured by the liberals, who want more political power.  

In 1848, a revolution is about to happen. To prevent that, Willem II signs a constitution.

  • Every 4 year elections (however, there is census suffrage: only when you earn enough, you can vote) 
  • The Netherlands is a now a parlementary democracy

Het parlement is de volksvertegenwoordiging: hierin zitten mensen die door het volk gekozen 
- de taak van het parlement is om de regering te controleren
- het parlement bestaat uit de Eerste Kamer en de Tweede Kamer

- de Eerste Kamer wordt indirect gekozen door burgers
