Prior knowledge
The British army was one of the strongest armies in the world. They conquered a lot of North-American lands. The British had a big territory in North-America that kept on growing bigger. While this was happening, a lot of British people moved to that area to live there for the rest of their lives. These people stayed for generations, and so 13 independent British colonies were born.

The Boston Tea Party
After raising the taxes on tea, chocolat and sugar the Americans started to boycot the British. The British ships were'nt allowed in the American harbours, except for one; The harbour of Boston. So one night the colonist wanted to riot and sixty people of Boston got on three different British ships.

War
The first few riots were immediately struck down by the British. Until the battle at Concord where the rebellions won. The British were not unstoppable anymore, and this inspired a lot of other American colonials to join the fight in Boston.

Indepence Day
On the 4th of July, the Declaration of Independence is approved. The thirteen colonies are independent of Britain. So each year the Americans celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July.

The actual war
In 1778 America allied with France to support each other and fight the British people together. A few years later at the battle of Yorktown, they succeed. General Cornwallis is forced to give up Yorktown, and the British seem to lose faith in the whole war at all.

Final peace
The British end up recognizing Americans' independence. In 1783, the proposal known as the Treaty of Versailles was finally ratified by Congress, signifying the official and formal end of the American War of Independence
