Tip: how to say no like the British

When they receive an invitation and have to decline it – either because they can’t come or they
don’t feel like it – the British never just say ‘no’. They will always apologise a lot and give a
good reason – although it’s not necessarily true!

Exercise 6
a. First, study the word web and have a conversation about the activities and discuss what it would be like to engage in them. Decide on which two activities are the most boring.

b. Now, have a conversation using expressions A and B:
 - Student 1 chooses an activity and invites student 2 to this – very dull – activity.
 - Student 2 declines – extremely politely and with a (made-up) excuse, like the British!
 - Finished? Choose another activity and switch roles
