Wat dachten de dierenartsen nadat ze de dieren hadden onderzocht? (alinea 1)

(1) When the cubs arrived, the vets were amazed by the strange blotchy pattern on the cats' coats. They were covered in what looked like brown and black clouds, whereas common leopards would have a spot pattern. "The rangers were unaware that they'd rescued a really rare species called clouded leopards," said vet Panjit Basumatary. He and his team examined the two cubs and estimated that they were only a few weeks old. They were relieved that neither animal had any bad cuts, broken bones, or obvious illnesses, but because both of them weighed less than 1 kg, the vets feared that they were dangerously underfed. The vets tried hand-feeding the cubs cow's milk using baby bottles. Fortunately both patients ate well.

Wat besloten de experts te doen met de welpjes? (alinea 2)

Ze besloten de welpjes
(2) Now that the brothers' health seemed stable, wildlife experts had to decide the cubs' future. Clouded leopards are too small to be a threat to people or livestock, so they could be released. But without the care and protection of their mother, the cubs would not stand a chance in the wild. Therefore, the experts decided to hand-raise the leopard cubs. "When animals are this rare, every single individual matters," they said.

(3) The cubs began taking walks on a leash through their natural habitat of dense forests. After one week, the keepers removed the leashes so that the tiny cats could climb and jump around freely. Clouded leopards spend most of their time up in trees. Adult clouded leopards climb along branches while clinging underneath like sloths, hang upside down from their hind legs like monkeys, and scramble headfirst down the sides of trees like squirrels. These young clouded leopards had to learn all this.

Hoe weten de verzorgers hoe het een jaar later met de nevelpanters gaat? (alinea 4)
(4) In just a few weeks, the two leopards became so wild they had to be tranquilised with a dart in order to handle them. The keepers then carried the tranquilised cats to the vets so they could attach radio-tracking collars. Once the sedative wore off, the cats slunk away into the forest for good. A year later, the brothers continue to live in their natural home - proof that clouded leopards can be hand-raised and released successfully.

noot 1: in het Nederlands heten deze dieren nevelpanters.
