- Om 08.45 vliegt het 1e vliegtuig het World Trade Center in New York. Op dat moment realiseren velen nog niet dat dit een terroristische aanslag. 
- Wanneer om 09.03 een tweede vliegtuig de 2e toren raakt, wordt het duidelijk dat het geen ongeluk is. 
- In het uur daarna vliegt een 3e vliegtuig in het Pentagon en nog een vierde stort neer op een grasveld in Pennsylvania.

Na de aanslag beschuldigt de Amerikaanse overheid de terroristische groep al-Qaida, hun leider is Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden verbergt zich in Afghanistan, waar al-Qaida de macht heeft. Ongeveer een maand na de aanslag start de Verenigde Staten een oorlog tegen Afghanistan.

De hele wereld is veranderd sinds 2001. In Nederland ontstaat er angst voor terreur. Sommige Nederlanders hebben steeds luidere kritiek op de Islam en er komen politieke partijen die inspelen op die angsten en onzekerheden. Er komen meer aanslagen van al-Qaida. In 2004 worden er vier passagierstreinen opgeblazen in Madrid en een jaar later zijn meerdere aanslagen in het openbaar vervoer van Londen.

- Sinds 2005 moet je vanaf veertien jaar altijd je identificatiekaart kunnen laten zien.
- Er is een bewaarplicht voor bel- en internetgegevens. 
- Ook op het vliegveld zijn er nieuwe regels. Controles en regels zijn strenger zoals de vloeistofregels. In een flesje kun je namelijk exploderende vloeistoffen meenemen.
