Reported Questions

Amikor kérdést idézünk, alapvetően a Reported Speech szabályait be kell tartanunk, így itt is "ugrik" egyet hátra az igeidő, alakul(hat)nak a személyes névmások, határozok, stb.

Innentől kezdve bonyolódik a dolog. Két típusú kérdést tudunk megkülönböztetni:

   A. Eldöntendő kérdés

   B. Kifejtendő kérdés

Kifejtendő kérdés idézése:

A Reported Speech szabályai szerint alakítjuk, az idézett kérdést a kérdőszóval kötjük (ami innentől kötőszóként funkcionál), majd kijelentő szórendet alkalmazunk:
What are you doing? → She asked me what I was doing.
Where did you go to school? → He asked me where I’d gone to school.

Eldöntendő kérdés idézése:

A Reported Speech szabályai szerint alakítjuk, és az idézett kérdést if-fel (jelentése "hogy") kötjük, illetve itt is kijelentő szórendet alkalmazunk:
Did you enjoy the party? → She asked me if I’d enjoyed the party.
Do you like coffee? → She asked if I liked coffee.
   

Reported Questions (folytatás)

Eldöntendő kérdés esetén használhatunk if helyett whether-t is. Picit talán választékosabb, amúgy csereszabatosak:

Do you have a pen? → She asked me whether I had a pen.

Igazából létezik még egy típusú kérdés, amikor két opciót ajánlunk (ezért ez is eldöntendőnek minősül):

Did you do the task or not? →

I wanted to know whether he had done the task or not.

Kötelező a Whether, ha...

Az alábbi esetekben mindig <span style="color: rgb(31, 50, 158)"><b>whether</b></span>-t használunk <span style="color: rgb(31, 50, 158)"><span style="font-weight: bold">if</span></span> helyett:<br><span style="font-weight: bold">Főnévi igenév előtt:</span><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: rgb(31, 50, 158)">I don’t know <u>whether</u> to buy the blue one or the red one.</span><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="color: rgb(210, 0, 0)">Not: I don’t know if to buy the blue one …</span><br>"Or not" előtt:<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="color: rgb(31, 50, 158)">Can you tell me <u>whether</u> or not you’re interested in the job.</span><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="color: rgb(210, 0, 0)">Not: Can you tell me if or not you’re interested …</span><br>Prepozíciók után:<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="color: rgb(31, 50, 158)">We’re not interested in <u>whether</u> we get great jobs and that kind of thing, we just want to have a good time.</span><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <span style="color: rgb(210, 0, 0)">Not: We’re not interested in if we get great jobs and that kind of thing …</span></span>
