Skimming: When you are looking for the main idea or topic of the text (i.e. answering questions sucha as: what is the article about? )
Scanning: When you are looking at specific details in the text to find the answers to specific questions (i.e. " In what year did Mount Vesuvius erupt?'
Asking questions: Asking yourself (formulating questions) before, during and after reading . These can be explicit (from the text) or implicit (form prior knowldge, curiosity etc..) REMEMBER YOU USE THESE STRATEGIES EVERYDAY PROBABLY WITHOUT REALIZING!

HOMEWORK
You have all picked a novel by now, start reading your novel so you finish on time!
I want you to think about the reading strategies that you use daily (skimming through instagram, scanning for a departure time on a bus schedule etc..) . Before next class write down at least 5 strategies that you have used in the days between this class and our next class and bring this list to our lesson.

Starter:
You will try to summarize a text in group
I will put the texts (one for every group) in the front of the classroom.
You will make groups of 4
You will have one minute to discuss your strategy before the assignment.
After you decide what to do: every person in the group gets one minute to read the text.
After your whole group has read the text you have 3 minutes to write a summary of the text.
You will present your summaries to the class.

Summarizing: Theory
It helps you determine important ideas and consolidate important details that support them
It enables you to focus on key words and phrases of an assigned text that are worth noting and remembering
It teaches you how to take a large selection of texts and reduce it to the main points for better understanding.
Slide 8 - Slide
How to summarize:
Always use these questions:
What are the main ideas?
What are the crucial details neccesary for supporting the ideas?
What information is irrelevant or unneccesary?
Use keywords or phrases to identify the main points of the text
