Emperor Aurelian defeated the Germanic people. The Germanic negotiators came to negotiate peace:"It would be best to make peace  with us now. For if we can agree terms, you can rely on us as allies against your enemies. If you also desire peace, then it is reasonable that you give us the same amount of gold and silver that we received to keep our friendship." Dexippus, Wars against the Germanic peoples, circa 275.
