Past simple: Last night I lost my keys, I had to call my flatmate to let me in.
Present perfect: I have lost my keys, can you help me look for them?
In the first sentence the speaker lost their key, but it has no effect on the present situation.
In the second sentence the speaker lost their key and needs help finding the key in the present situation, meaning right now.

What's the difference
Past simple: I knew Julie for ten years.
Present perfect: I have known Julie for ten years.
But the speaker lost contact
And the speaker still knows her

So what is it used for?
Present perfect:
Past simple:
An unfinished action that started in the past and continues to the present
He has been married for thirty-five years (and he's still married now)
John has never understood the present perfect (and still doesn't)
Finished actions
He was married for thirty-five years (but he divorced)
