like
  • Can be used as a preposition and is followed by a noun, a pronoun (voornaamwoord) or a gerund (-ing vorm: like swimming).  
  • It is used to give a comparison (vergelijking). 

Examples: 
He behaves like a clown.  (noun)
His new jeans are like ours .  (pronoun)
This test is so difficult it’s like pulling teeth.   (gerund)

as
Can be used as a preposition to tell you what job or function a person or thing has.
Examples: 
He works as a clown. 
It works as a sort of screwdriver.

Compound adjectives
A compound adjective (samengesteld bijv. nw) is an adjective which has two parts and is usually written with a hyphen (-). Many have a present or past participle as the second part of the compound.
