What do words like: who, whose, which and that do?
They connect two pieces of information about somebody, something or
somewhere in one sentence

Relative pronouns
  • Betrekkelijk voornaamwoord

  • Relative pronouns are used to give extra information using a relative clause (bijzin)
  1. The man who stole my guitar
  2. The man whose guitar was stolen
  3. The man to whom I was speaking to had a guitar

  • Who is for people
  • Whose is for possession
  • Whom same as who but with a prepostion in front
  • Preposition = voorzetsel

  1. My friend Tom, who has a cat, prefers dogs
  2. This the cat which Tom has
  3. This is the cat that Tom has
  • who = people
  • which = animals or things
  • that = both
  • Watch out!
  • You can replace who/which with that IF  there is no comma in front of it
  • Comma(s) = non-vital information

  2. The woman who(m) Kimberly is talking to is a writer
  3. The woman that Kimberly is talking to is a producer
  • When the preposition has moved you have some options as illustrated

  • Watch out!
  • Preposition + which is also possible  
  • Again when the preposition has moved you have some options
