Finding relevant information

Questions are regularly asked about information that is simply already in the text. You must be able to find this information.

You should carefully look at the headings and closely read the section where the requested information is likely to be found.

Sometimes, the question already indicates where to find the information, such as in paragraph 10. In that case, you only need to read paragraph 10.

Recognizing the main idea

The main idea is the most important "thought" of the text. Sometimes, you are asked about the main idea of the entire text, but you may also get questions about the main idea of a specific part of the text (such as a single paragraph).

To find the main idea, you can look at the title and the first and last sentence of the paragraph, as they often contain key information.

Text relations 

The text you will encounter in your final exam consists of different sections. These sections have specific relationships with each other. For example, one part may provide an example of something mentioned in another part, or a conclusion may be drawn.

You must be able to identify the relationship between different parts of the text.

There are many more! Understanding these relationships will help you analyze texts effectively.

Meaning behind text elements

On your exam, you will encounter many questions that simply ask for the meaning of a sentence, a passage, or a paragraph.

🕵️‍♀️ How can you practice for this? Simply by reading and listening to a lot of English! The more exposure you have, the better you will become at understanding the language.

In other words: Watch BBC, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. —with a dictionary by your side! 📖

Author’s Opinion & Experts 🧑‍🦱 🧑‍🎓 👩‍🔬 🧑‍⚕️

On the exam, you will often be asked about the author’s opinion.

What are the author’s intentions, views, and feelings? The author may consciously or unconsciously reveal their stance on a topic.

Experts may also be cited, sharing research related to the text’s subject. You must be able to distinguish their findings from the author’s opinion.

Gap texts

On the exam, you will also encounter gap-fill texts.

Here’s how to approach them:

✅ Read the sentences before and after the gap.

✅ Think about what could logically fit in the gap.

✅ Choose the answer that is closest to your own idea.

✅ Check if the answer makes sense within the text.

If you have no idea what the correct answer is, start by eliminating the nonsense answers first. This will make the choices clearer and help you find the best option more easily. ✅❌

Signal words indicate how sentences or sections are connected. Recognizing them is essential!
