High Middle Ages: 1050 – 1300 AD
Late Middle Ages: 1300 – 1500 AD

The High Middle Ages
  • After the year 1000, the European population grew fast. This brought about several major changes.
  1. A great number of new cities and towns were founded, which led to the rise of a social class: the bourgeoisie.
  2. New monarchs and states arose. (usually accompanied by war and violence)
  3. Christianity remained the dominant religion, but a rival religion was stirring: Islam.
