William the Conqueror

Harold was killed in Battle of Hastings => William won and seized power => 25 December 1066: King William the Conqueror.

William rewarded the Norman clergy and warriors with noble titles and land seized from the English nobility, they became his liegemen.

William wrote everything he and his liegemen owned down in a document called the Domesday Book.

Centralization
Kings that succeeded William had an central court of audits which kept track of all royal spending and (tax) income.

Centralization: leading the country from the capital city, led to power struggle, because the clergy and nobles weren't too happy about the king having such power.
