Manorial system (hofstelsel)
Economic system for protection

Farmers asked a powerful lord for protection. 
Farmers lived on a manor; piece of land devided in two halfs

In return for his protection the farmers paid rent to the lord, not money, but goods or a portion of their harvest.

The farmers became serfs;
- They could not move without permission
- approval to marry someone outside the manor
- pay taxes to use the lords mill

Manors were self-sufficient.

Feudalism
This is a political system. 

The Frankisch king gave a fief (piece of land) to the nobles.
They needed to rule when the king wasn't there.
