The planets are separated by an asteroid belt. Therefore creating inner and outer planets. Inner planets, like Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, have rocky surfaces. Outer planets, like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, have no surface and are made of gas.
