Slide 2 - Slide

What are...
Genotype and phenotype?
Alleles and genes?

Slide 3 - Slide

11.6 Cells and chromosomes

Slide 4 - Slide

Learning objective
You will learn about cell division and cell differentiation.

Slide 5 - Slide

How do sex cells get 23 chromosomes?
Meiosis or reduction division = a special kind of cell division in which sex cells containing half the original number of chromosomes develop.

Haploid = when a cell only contains one copy of each pair of chromosomes

Slide 6 - Slide

Meiosis

Slide 7 - Slide

Simple cell division
Mitosis = simple cell division; two cells with the complete number of chromosomes are formed from one single cell

Diploid = when a body cell has two sets of chromosomes

Slide 8 - Slide

Mitosis

Slide 9 - Slide

Cell differentiation
Cell differentiation = different types of cells differ in shape and size

Cell specialisation = different types of cells differ in function

Slide 10 - Slide

Regulatory genes = control what proteins are produced to turn genes in a cell on or off
Regulatory genes = control what proteins are produced to turn genes in a cell on or off
