There are three ways to talk about the future:

  1. with the present simple
  2. with the to be going to
  3. with the will/shall

Future tense: to be going to
You use 'to be going to' when:

1. You have a plan to do something.
(My mum is going to buy a new dress next week.)

Future tense: will & shall
You use 'will' when...

1. ... you offer to do sth. or spontaneously decide to do sth.
(I will help you move next week.)
2. ... you promise something.
(I will buy you that game if you pass your test.)
3. ... you predict that something will happen.
(It'll be dark this time tomorrow.)

Shall you only use when it's a question starting with I en we

You use the present simple when ...

1. something follows a specific scheme.
2. something follows a specific schedule.
3. something follows a specific timetable
4. something always happens at a specific time.

  • timetable/ sth. happens regularly/ schedule
When do you use 'to be going to'?
  • You planned to do something.
When do you use 'will' (or 'shall')?
  • Offer, promise, spontaneous idea or prediction
