The Dutch Revolt
  • The Dutch people are displeased with Alba
  • A big group of refugees, the geuzen, try to
    reach the Netherlands through Germany. 
  • William of Orange, takes charge.
  • In 1568 he attacks the Netherlands with his
    army and starts Dutch Revolt, also known as
    the Eighty years' war.

  • Albas armies are too strong for the Geuzen
  • The rebels do find success in 1572.  --> The watergeuzen capture Den Briel.
  • Because of this more and more cities dare to side with the rebels.
  • The Dutch provinces sign a treaty (1576) that
    states that each province can determine
    which religion it's people practice and that
    the Spanish army has to leave their country.

  • The Dutch provinces end up also arguing about religion. 
  • Most southern Catholic provinces side with the Spanish.
  • The northern provinces continue the battle in 1579.
  • They stop recognizing Philip II as their ruler since
    1581. --> The Act of Abjuration.
  • William of Orange is murdered by Balthasar Gerards
    in 1584.
  • Then the seven most northern provinces decide to move forward as a republic without a ruler as the Dutch Republic in 1588.
